A pair of mating Cairns Birdwing Butterflies, Magnetic Island North Queensland Australia- Standard 3:2 ratio, Open Edition prints
Colour beyond imagination for these two mating Cairns Birdwing Butterflies in Far North Queensland, Australia. They will stay like this for some time before the female, shown here just red, yellow and white on her body and no turquoise, will fly away to find just one specific vine. Once this native Dutchman’s Pipevine (Aristolochia tagala) has been located in a rain forest of such diversity, she will ensure it has another sturdier plant nearby and the lay her eggs. The sturdy plant will be needed by her caterpillar when it comes time to pupate into a chrysalis as the vines cannot carry that weight. They have often also been stripped of any leaves by a very fat caterpillar!
These images are all wide ratio panorama with a 3:2 long edge to short edge ratio. They are printed on 280gms quality photo paper with rich permanent inks and crisp resolution across the frame.
