The Emu (Milkyway) races over Yunbenun (Magnetic Island) - Open Edition Expanded 2:1 ratio Print

from $90.00

On the Eastern side of Magentic Island in Queensland Australia there are high cliff views over the Coral Sea. They offer a spectacular view over the Great Barrier Reef during the day. However having lived there for a number of years, I knew that nightfall should bring about an even more breath-taking picture of the Milkyway and a starlit headland of granite boulders. It took a little planning and patience for a clear night, but the result shown here did not disappoint. It is the outcome of 18 individual shots over 2 rows to capture the breadth of the scene and do justice to both the unique geology, and the canvas of night stars from our galaxy. The indigenous populations of Australia have for thousands of years referred to the core of the Milkyway as the Emu “ngui”. They used it’s location in the night sky to know when the Emu would lay eggs. The glow on the horizon toward the right is the city of Townsville.
