Sunset on Magnetic, the night before "Debbie" - Open Edition Standard 3:2 ratio Print

from $100.00

Cyclones are a part of life in the Australian tropics. Far North Queensland gets their fair share. This shot was taken off Cockle Bay on Magnetic Island and depicts a phenomenon that is often associated with Cyclones - an absolutely stunning sunset the night prior. The richness of colours, the movement of clouds and the relatively calm coral sea belies what is/was to come. The intensity of colour once the sun had actually dipped below the horizon was profound, giving all the items on the beach a similar lustre. The steps on the left of this image led me to wonder about inspirations for lyrics like “Stairway to Heaven”. Would they be there tomorrow? Would Cyclone Debbie have buried all the features of this beach? Would the mangroves survive? It reminded me that a photograph can be a profoundly powerful force by itself, a beautifully frozen moment for mother nature which is frequently transient in time and had something completely different planned for the next day.
