A powerful slap of the Humpback Whale’s tail is about to disturb a sultry calm surface on the tropical waters of the South Pacific. First, a playful toss of warm clear water into the air, like some a hair flick from a model in a holiday brochure. The real tale though, is the knowledge and intelligence of what’s below the surface. These cetaceans are phenomenally rich in intellect with a vocabulary of sounds and songs that rival that of humans for complexity and capacity to engage. We have no knowledge of what this simple flick of the fluke conveys, but many siblings from miles around and likely a calf in the immediate vicinity, are all too aware and will respond as appropriate.
