The Hippopotamus or “Riverhorse” as aptly coined, is an expert in the water and spends the majority of daylight partially or totally submerged feeding on the grasses of the river bed. Their huge bulk made buoyant by waters of the rivers enables they to be profoundly agile in the water, albeit not quite as athletic as the Disney ballerinas they once inspired. The light reflecting off the ripples in this stream, and the wet leathery hide of the Hippo, catch in the eye of this beastie and the gaze penetrates deep into the viewers. He takes a breath for just moments and glances at you like a stranger on the bus, before resuming a feast of greens.
