One of the quickest learners of all mammals, the baby Humpback is born with the ability to swim and surface for air. It has developed skills that relate to pure joy within weeks of birth. These include this breaching behaviour where they launch themselves out of the water skyward, and then crash and splash down on to their back. In later life this will be one of the ways that Males in particular demonstrate dominance and strength. This little chap was already getting it just right about 4 out of every 5 tries, before checking in again closely with Mum as if to look for re-assurance and praise.
