Side by Side - Mother Humpback Whale and Calf, Queensland, Australia - Open Edition Standard 3:2 ratio Print

from $90.00

Humpback Whales travel North from their feeding grounds near Antarctica, up to the balmy waters of the Equator to give birth to a single calf. Once born, and after a few days of Mum’s milk, they gradually commence the journey back South to feed again. During this time they often spend time behind the protection of the Great Barrier Reef in the bays of Islands off the North Queensland Coast. This allows the youngsters to master their swimming skills and bond with Mum even more deeply. The mothers are devoted to their offspring and spend this entire period protecting and guiding them through all things. Highly intelligent, these young cetaceans are incredibly inquisitive and playful. So the adult whale has to be both nurturing and sometimes quite firm. In this shot she is guiding him into one of the bays of Magnetic Island and shadowing his every move. Both are undoubtedly aware of the boats and sea kayaks in the area, but the navigation skills Mum deploys are faultless, and the little one mimics her every move.

  • This is an open-edition print in either a lustre (semi-gloss) or matt finish.

  • All sizes are listed in inches with a 3:2 ratio
