There is no greater protection for a baby Humpback Whale Calf than his mother. Here she waves her massive pectoral fins to give clear signals he has to stay close, and woe betide any one coming near either of them. The adults also slap their fins on the surface as a way to communicate to their young and each other. Here she is on her back as “junior” swims through those out-stretched arms and blows a small spout of excited breath! The time spent in the warm waters of the Coral Sea off Queensland’s north coast, behind the safety of the Barrier Reef will strengthen bonds, and develop skills in the young before the long trip back to krill rich southern oceans. Whilst up North, the calf will suckle from mum for all his nutrition.
