Camels over the channel country of north western Queensland, Australia - Open Edition Standard 3:2 ratio Print

from $90.00

The Channel Country of western Queenslands is so called as it provides both underground, and above ground water transport of the tropical northern rains in the wet season. Through natural “channels” these waters are delivered to the dry desert of Central Australia and Lake Eyre. A fitting metaphor for this introduced animal species to Australia, the Dromedary Camel. Brought here by British colonialists from their experience with them in Afghanistan. They and their Afghan Cameleers who came with them did profound service in opening up transport routes through huge tracts of inland Australia in the early days of exploration and subsequent “development”. Once the rail and road trains came along however, these camels were simply let loose with no value to fend for themselves… and they did. They now run in large wild herds across large parts of central Australia. This magnificently majestic chap was up early and out at a purple dawn, likely well aware it was the coolest part of the day for a stroll in this part of the world.
