Salty Croc in the Northern Territory, Australia - Open Edition Standard 3:2 ratio Print

from $90.00

The Northern Territory of Australia is a very wild last frontier wilderness. Ranging from tropical rain forest beauty to parched dry desert interior and deep gorges cut by thousands of years of rains, witnessed only by the Indigenous peoples that have managed this land for as long as songs have been sung. In residence for even longer still is a pre-historic predator that evolved early to be profoundly successful at what they do - The Salt Water Crocodile or “Croc” to the locals. Emerging as babies from eggs laid in nests constructed on the estuarine banks by their mothers, they can grow anywhere up to 4m - 5m. A good portion of that length devoted to immensely powerful jaws edged in massive pointed teeth. A crushing jaw is frequently enough to break up their prey, however when this fails they start to rip things apart by spinning in a rolling motion (a death roll) in the water, literally tearing apart what ever they have gripped. This chap was in the Adelaide River, and I was as close as I would ever like to be when he emerged from the muddy clouds in the water without any warning. I’d like to think my retreat looked dignified. Thankfully there are no shots of me to prove otherwise. The sheer bulk and power of that tail to propel him through the water, latent death is all I can think of. Respect big fellow!
