To say these birds are impressive is a massive understatement. The Southern Cassowary can attain a height of 1.7m when stood with its head up. Whilst this one was not quite that, it was none the less getting my full respect at every step. I was taking landscape shots of the rain forest reaching the tropical beaches when I heard the undergrowth rustle just behind me. Turning around with wide angle lens fixed to the camera and… there was this chap. Suffice to say, he was far calmer than I was, but I did manage to shoot off a couple of photographs before slowly retreating to a much safer distance. Fixing a long telephoto lens enabled me to get close-up, but far more “comfortably” for my part at least. Just look at those colossal feet and claws, a living descendant of dinosaurs if ever there was!
