The lashes and inviting gaze on this Southern Cassowary belie the perils that might be moments away. These flightless birds are huge and have dinosaur like talons on equally large feet. Their colourful wattle and enormous head ornamentation are every bit as fascinating as the massive eyes that keep you fixed in their stare. Males raise their chicks through the rain forests that run to the beaches and shorelines of tropical North Queensland, and the aptly named Cassowary Coast. This unexpected encounter was perhaps a shock for both of us. Thankfully he showed as much patience and reserve with me as I did with him.
