Banff, in the Albertan Canadian Rockies is alive with wildlife and one of the most attractive has to be the Elk. In late November at the start of winter the Elk have almost finished their “Rut”. The males that have been victorious, whilst tired, often look the part of the victor too. An amazing time to observe them is just after the winter sun has clipped the ridges of the highest peaks, and the shafts of sunlight pour through the Larch and Pine forest. The Elk are so at home here that the presence of someone’s home or backyard rarely phases their desire to rebuild strength and body mass before the freezing winter. So grazing happens everywhere there is something to eat. As this chap raised his head to face the light for a split second, the instinct to click kicked in for me and the image here is the result. A sublime morning.
