The Paperbark trees ring this billabong at the back of Horseshoe Bay. Protected by the sand dunes from the coral sea, it acts as a final holding bay for fresh water that streams down in the wet season from Mount Cook, in the centre of the Island. Deep under the silty bottom of the Billabong are buried waterlily seeds that toward the end of the wet shoot and sprout to deliver a festival of lotus blooms. This quiet reflective piece was captured in the week prior to the majority of blooms, and has a very soft but expectant feel about it. The Billabong is constantly changing and taking on a different mask through the seasons, but this has to be one of its most delightful.
